COMMUNITY NEWS

PictureCatholic Interschool Touch Carnival SHY Team
Some ten years ago now , my oldest son attended a motivational speech at the university he was attending.  The speaker had many wise words including:
  • Being a male is a matter of birth.
  • Being a man is a matter of age.
  • But being a gentleman is a matter of choice.
Obviously, this coin can be also flipped to describe the makings of a lady.

The creation of a lady or a gentleman is not just deportment, good manners or knowing which shirt matches that pair of pants. There is an essence of poise to a true lady or gentleman; a person who has high standards but is also respectful and considerate of others without ‘looking down on them.’  Although rarely seen today, pulling out chairs and opening doors used to be a sign of a gentleman.

Some courtesies are still appropriate in contemporary times. A firm handshake and direct eye contact are still considered a symbol of someone’s reliability and strength of character. How a person dresses or eats with their mouth closed are also indicators of a lady or gentleman. Language choices, speaking respectfully and not swearing, are basic marks of the well-mannered.

This term, I have been extremely proud of the behaviour and manners of our Sacred Heart children. Several weeks ago when we underwent our school NSIT (review), the external panel members commented on many occasions on the excellent behaviour, wonderful manners and overall calmness of our children.

This week while I was showing a potential family around our school, the politeness of our children, both young and older, as many said hello and good morning to our visitors was quite overwhelming.

And yesterday at the annual Catholic interschool touch carnival, our Year 6 team displayed very pleasing sportsmanship, playing with determination and grit. They bowed out of the competition in the semi final, losing to the eventual winners: St Anthony’s. Although terribly disappointed, they were very gracious in defeat and humble in victory during the day.

I know that employment is some time off for our primary school children but speaking with business people around town, they stress the importance of first impressions. A soft or damp handshake, a mumbled hello and casualness of dress can be a real deal breaker.

I thank our families for continuing to work with the staff at Sacred Heart in nurturing our young people into being well mannered, respectful and considerate.

Take care and have a well deserved break everyone
